About this piece
The zodiac signs have long been used to mark not only years but also directions and hours. The Rat corresponds to north and the Horse to south, which is why a meridian is called shigosen, the "Rat–Horse line". The Hour of the Rat falls around midnight.
This standing plaque, painted with a rat by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda, suits the birthday of someone born in the Year of the Rat, or a celebration when their own sign comes round.
