About this piece
North-east lies between the Ox and the Tiger in the zodiac and is called ushitora. It has long been regarded as the "demon gate", through which ogres come and go, and the way ogres are drawn with an ox's horns and a tiger-skin loincloth is said to come from this direction.
This standing plaque, painted with a tiger by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda, is for the birthday of someone born in the Year of the Tiger, or as a zodiac decoration.
