About this piece
The zodiac also marks directions: south-east, between the Dragon and the Snake, is called tatsumi, also written with a single character. The Hour of the Dragon falls around eight in the morning, when the day's work begins.
This standing plaque, painted with a dragon by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda, suits the birthday of someone born in the Year of the Dragon, or a celebration when their own sign comes round.
