About this piece
The Japanese words for noon, morning and afternoon, shōgo, gozen and gogo, all come from the zodiac hours: noon falls in the Hour of the Horse, and the times before and after it came to be called "before the Horse" and "after the Horse". As a direction, the Horse is due south.
This standing plaque, painted with a horse by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda, is for the birthday of someone born in the Year of the Horse, or as a zodiac decoration.
