About this piece
Monkeys were once held to be messengers of the gods who protect horses, and in the stables of samurai households, monkey performances were staged to pray for the horses' health and safety. The monkey-performing art that continues today has roots in this belief.
This standing plaque, painted with a monkey by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda, is for the birthday of someone born in the Year of the Monkey, or as a zodiac decoration.
