About this piece
The tiger has long been thought to drive away evil with its strength, and is also known as the White Tiger, one of the four guardian beasts, which protects the west. The custom of displaying papier-mâché tigers to guard children survives in many regions.
This 9cm Hakata doll was made for the Year of the Tiger in 2010, the earliest year among the zodiac figures we show.
