About this piece
Horses were long regarded as the mounts of the gods, and the ema votive plaque is said to have begun when people painted a horse on a board to offer at a shrine in place of a living one. Because uma, horse, sounds like the word for things going well, it is also loved as a charm for smooth progress.
This 12cm Hakata doll was made for the Year of the Horse in 2014, a fitting gift for anyone starting new work or a new plan.
