About this piece
Because saru, monkey, sounds like the word for "leaving", the monkey is a charm for misfortune to depart, and since it also sounds like "surpassing", it has been a guardian in contests. From the three monkeys of "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" at Nikkō Tōshōgū to the monkeys revered as divine messengers at Hiyoshi Taisha, monkeys are closely bound up with Japanese faith.
This 13cm Hakata doll was made for the Year of the Monkey in 2016, to be displayed as a charm against misfortune.
