About this piece
In the tale of how the zodiac began, as the animals hurried to greet the god at New Year, the rat rode on the ox's back and jumped down at the last moment to arrive first. Because rats have many young, they symbolise a flourishing line of descendants, and they are also loved as messengers of Daikokuten.
This 11cm Hakata doll was made for the Year of the Rat in 2020. As the sign that opens the twelve, it makes a charm for new beginnings.
