About this piece
Walking slowly and steadily, the ox has long been a symbol of perseverance and sincerity. It is also said to be the messenger of Sugawara no Michizane, god of learning, and Tenmangū shrines such as Dazaifu Tenmangū have "stroking oxen" that are said to heal ailments and grant wisdom to those who touch them.
This 8cm Hakata doll was made for the Year of the Ox in 2021, to be displayed with the wish for a year of sure, step-by-step progress.
