About this piece

The Doll Festival on 3 March was once known as Jōshi no sekku. People would transfer their impurities to figures of paper or grass and set them afloat on a river, a custom that survives in places today as nagashi-bina, and one of the roots of the Hina doll.

Kasei-bina is a pair of Hakata dolls that carries on that tradition of prayer. Displayed with its folding screen and stand, it makes a bright festival arrangement.
