About this piece
The Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Exhibition is an open craft exhibition organised by the Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Association. This Mai (Noh) by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda was shown at the 50th anniversary exhibition in 2011 and received the Full Member's Prize.
Noh dance expresses emotion through movements pared to the essential, built from sliding steps and the set forms known as kata. This piece takes those movements of Noh as its theme.
