About this piece

The chrysanthemum has long been a flower of longevity in Japan and a motif closely tied to the imperial court. The male doll's blue robe is scattered with chrysanthemums in white, pink and orange, painted all the way round to the back.

The female doll holds a hiōgi court fan painted with an evergreen pine, with coloured cords hanging from each end. The bands of colour at her collar and sleeves represent the layered robes of the jūnihitoe, and the layering can be seen from behind as well.
