About this piece
The gunbai is the fan that samurai commanders used to direct their troops. Today it is best known as the fan a sumo referee raises to indicate the winner, and the phrase "the gunbai is raised" means to be victorious.
This small piece by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda takes the form of a gunbai, a good-luck charm to give someone facing an exam, a match or a decisive moment in business.
