About this piece
The Noh play Hagoromo is set on the pine-lined shore of Miho in Suruga. When the fisherman Hakuryō finds a beautiful robe hanging on a pine branch and makes to take it home, a celestial maiden appears and laments that without it she cannot return to heaven. Given back her robe, she performs a dance in thanks and rises into the sky.
The sight of the maiden dancing her way up beyond the heights of Mount Fuji is known as one of the most splendid scenes in Noh. This piece renders her as a Hakata doll.
