About this piece

Miho no Matsubara in Shizuoka, the setting of Hagoromo, is a celebrated beauty spot looking out on Mount Fuji, and is listed as part of the World Heritage site "Fujisan". The "Hagoromo pine", on which the maiden is said to have hung her robe, still stands there today.

This Hakata doll portrays the celestial maiden in white robes, a companion to the red Hagoromo. Set side by side, red and white form the auspicious pairing of kōhaku, bringing extra splendour to a celebration.
