About this piece

The Noh play Yuya, written with the characters for Kumano, tells of a woman in the service of Taira no Munemori. Worried for her sick mother back home, she begs leave to return but is refused, and is taken by Munemori to view the cherry blossoms at Kiyomizu-dera. When the blossoms scatter in the rain, the poem she composes moves Munemori at last to let her go to her mother.

Portraying a heart torn beneath cherry trees in full bloom, it is one of the best-loved spring plays in Noh. This piece renders Yuya as a 38cm Hakata doll.
