About this piece
Ebisu is said to be the only one of the Seven Lucky Gods native to Japan. Familiar with a fishing rod in hand and a large sea bream under his arm, he was first a god of fishing and later came to be widely worshipped as the god of prosperous business. At Tōka Ebisu Shrine in Hakata, too, crowds gather each January for the great festival to pray for success in trade.
A broad, beaming smile is called an "Ebisu face", and he is an emblem of plenty and good cheer. This piece renders Ebisu as a 32cm Hakata doll.
