About this piece
Shirabe first meant tuning an instrument, and in time came to mean the melody itself. It is a lovely word that calls to mind the sound of Japanese instruments such as the koto, the biwa and the flute.
This 34cm Hakata doll takes as its theme a moment of listening intently to music, a quiet piece in which the lingering notes seem almost audible, at home in a Japanese- or Western-style room alike.
