About this piece
Hiten are celestial beings who fly around the Buddha, playing music and scattering flowers in his praise. The image travelled from India by way of Dunhuang in China to Japan, where it survives in the murals of Hōryū-ji and in the figures of cloud-borne bodhisattvas at Byōdō-in.
Hiten I is a work by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda on this celestial theme, a figure in flight to enjoy as an image of prayer and blessing.
