About this piece
Koto, "ancient capital", refers to cities such as Nara and Kyoto that were once seats of the capital and carry long histories. The rooftops of their temples and shrines, the charm of their lanes and the sense of time that has flowed through them still captivate many people today.
Koto Gensō I is a work by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda inspired by such scenes, a poetic world poised somewhere between reality and fantasy.
