About this piece
Kokūzō Bosatsu is said to hold wisdom and merit as vast as the empty sky (kokū) and to share them with all. The custom of jūsan-mairi, in which children of thirteen (by traditional count) visit a temple to receive wisdom, grew from devotion to Kokūzō.
As the guardian deity of those born in the Years of the Ox and the Tiger, this 14cm Hakata doll suits a gift for someone of those signs, or a keepsake of a jūsan-mairi visit.
