About this piece
The camellia blooms from the depths of winter into early spring and has long been loved in Japan. "Yuki-tsubaki", snow camellia, is also the name of a camellia that grows wild in the snowy regions of Japan, and it suggests a supple strength that bears the weight of snow and flowers in spring.
This work by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda takes as its subject a camellia blooming in the snow, to be displayed with the wish of celebrating a fresh start, as a flower opens after a harsh season.
