About this piece
Sugawara no Michizane, affectionately known as Tenjin-sama, was a Heian-period scholar and statesman who is revered as the god of learning. In memory of his last years spent at Dazaifu, Dazaifu Tenmangū in Fukuoka draws visitors from all over Japan to pray for success in exams. The plum blossom he loved is also his emblem.
This 14cm Hakata doll portrays Tenjin in the form of a child, a subject with deep ties to Fukuoka and a fine gift to encourage a student or celebrate starting school.
