About this piece

In Japanese dance, Noh and Kabuki, a performer's first appearance on stage is called their hatsu-butai and is celebrated as an important milestone. There is even an old saying that lessons begun on the sixth day of the sixth month at the age of six will flourish, and many follow the path of the arts from early childhood.

Hatsumai, "First Dance", is a 32cm Hakata doll on the theme of that first moment of dancing, with all its nerves and pride, a fitting gift for anyone taking a new step, such as a first recital or entering an art.
