About this piece

"Plovers over waves" is an auspicious motif long used on kimono and tableware. Because chidori, plover, sounds like "taking a thousand", the bird is a charm for rich rewards and victory, and its flocks flying over rough waves have also symbolised the strength to overcome hardship and harmony within the family.

This work by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda takes the plover as its subject, a fitting gift for someone opening a business or taking on a new challenge.
