About this piece

The takarabune, or treasure ship, is said to bring good fortune, carrying the Seven Lucky Gods and their treasures; tradition has it that sleeping with a picture of one under your pillow at New Year brings a lucky first dream. The crane and tortoise, said to live a thousand and ten thousand years, are emblems of long life.

This standing plaque by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda combines the auspicious motifs of sunrise, treasure ship, crane and tortoise, and can be set out anywhere for New Year or a celebration of long life.
