About this piece
The five seasonal festivals, the gosekku, were fixed as official holidays by the shogunate in the Edo period. Each has its custom: seven-herb rice porridge on 7 January (Jinjitsu), peach blossoms on 3 March (Jōshi), irises on 5 May (Tango), bamboo decorations on 7 July (Tanabata) and chrysanthemums on 9 September (Chōyō), all with wishes for good health and growth.
Swap Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda's five plaques as each festival comes round, and enjoy seasonal decoration all through the year.
