About this piece
The scroll is one of the auspicious treasures of the takara-zukushi motif and has long symbolised wisdom and learning. Like a picture scroll, it is also a vessel that carries stories and knowledge.
This small piece by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda renders a scroll as an incense container, a fitting gift to mark a milestone in learning, such as starting school, moving up or graduating.
