About this piece
The hagoita is a paddle for hanetsuki, a shuttlecock game played at New Year. The black bead of the shuttlecock is made from the seed of the mukuroji tree, written with characters meaning "a child free from illness", and it is customary to give a hagoita for a girl's first New Year.
Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda has rendered the paddle as an incense container, to accompany New Year decorations or a celebration of a first New Year.
