About this piece
The biwa is a lute that reached Japan from the continent along the Silk Road. Besides its place in gagaku court music, it is known as the instrument of the blind biwa priests who recited The Tale of the Heike. It is also held by Benzaiten of the Seven Lucky Gods, and so symbolises the arts and good fortune.
Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda has rendered the biwa as an incense container, a fine gift for anyone devoted to music or the arts.
