About this piece
An inu-bako is a lidded box in the form of a pair of dogs, male and female. It was once placed at a bride's bedside as part of her wedding furnishings and later served as a guardian for her child. Together with the inu-hariko papier-mâché dog, it is loved as a charm for a child's healthy growth.
This inu-bako is by Hakata doll maker Toshiya Honda, a fitting accompaniment to congratulations on a birth or a first festival.
