About this piece
The dolls displayed for Tango no sekku include armour, helmets and warrior figures. Because armour protects the body, they carry the wish that a child be kept from harm and grow up strong.
Uijin depicts, as a Hakata doll, a young warrior setting out on his first campaign, an image to set beside a child who is about to step out into the world.
