About this piece

The kagami-no-ma, or mirror room, lies just before the bridgeway that leads onto the Noh stage, and a large mirror stands within it. Here the lead actor, the shite, puts on the mask and, facing his reflection, is said to let his spirit pass into the role he will play.

This Hakata doll takes as its subject the taut moment just before the curtain is raised, a piece that conveys the spirit behind the splendour of the Noh stage.
