About this piece

Shōki is a figure from Chinese legend. When the Tang emperor Xuanzong lay ill, Shōki appeared in his dream and drove away a small demon, and the emperor recovered. From this tale he became a guardian against evil and illness, and in Japan figures and pictures of Shōki came to be displayed for the Boys' Festival.

In the townhouses of Kyoto, small figures of Shōki are still set on the roof to protect the home. This piece renders Shōki as a Hakata doll.
